Tick Awareness

Hither Hills Trail- Montauk, NY

Hither Hills Trail- Montauk, NY

A close family friend passed away last week, and her illness presented no warning. Her last waking moments were hiking on the trail near NYC when she collapsed. Kidney failure was the cause of her death in less than 24 hours, and she had no sign of illness prior to her day hike. My friend wasn't even 30.

It turns out that Babesiosis is a nasty parasite that is becoming a more prevalent threat to the northeast of the USA. I cannot stress how important tick awareness is…

That being said, after finding a few hitchhikers from one of my hike recent hikes, I thought I was good-to-go until my next outing. Then I found one on my head two days later. Doxycycline x3 weeks is the prescription :/ No matter how hard you try, these little beasts will never stop trying.

Please be safe out there, and advocate awareness to everyone you know.

'Land Of The Free'

"Here's to the hearts of that cold, lonesome track,

To the life of the wanderlust... Free.

To all who have gone and have never come back,

Here's a tribute to you and me.

With our feet in the dirt, we're the grit of the Earth,

Heads a-ridin' the heavens o'erhead.

And they won't find a nickel of value or worth,

When our fortunes are tallied and read.

But no richer clan has there ever been known,

Since the times of all ruin and wrack;

Than those of us lost to the dust outward blown,

Who have gone and never come back."

Plein Air in The Enchantments

Mountains. During the infant stages of dating my then girlfriend, now wife, had her first exposure to trails, scratching below the surface beyond the board-walked trails like that in Bushkill Falls, Pennsylvania. It was in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia where painter Beth-Ann Wilson got her first taste of gritty trail. Now, having conquered the summit of Mount Washington, Aasgard Pass in the Enchantments, the Highline Trail in Glacier National Park, the Maryland Heights overlook near the Appalachian Trail hardly even registers on this oil painter’s Richter Scale…

Becoming fortunate enough to secure an overnight permit into the Enchantments of the Wenatchee National Forest this past summer, I began to assemble an unforgettable squadron of hikers, ‘The Six-Pack’- most coming from Baltimore, MD. My wife and I had decided to loosely plan a road trip to the Cascade mountains and back by compact car, transforming our trip into a life-impacting voyage.

Beth-Ann, being trained at MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art) as an oil painter, she took to her watercolors over this cross-country run for their superior portability. Watching an artist capture alpenglow on the scene  shows an aspect of backpacking I had never experienced. After decades of visiting national parks, section-hiking many parts of the Appalachian Trail, I had never experienced such wild inspiration as seeing this wicked painter do her thing.

Now this, is relaxation…
